Tonight I had my first Bollywood Dancing Class. Talk about getting outside your comfort zone and stretching your body and brain...I certainly did tonight! New dance moves. I stretched my body because this was sort of a Zumba-Bollywood dancing type class. Great cardio of course, but more importantly it contributes to healthy, vibrant aging because I was moving my body in new ways. I’ll admit I had a hard time with some of the dance moves – maybe 60% success rate -but I ...
31 Reasons I’m Vibrant at Sixty. #24 Six Ingredient Snowed In Date Night
Date nights are essential for vibrancy. And when the beautiful snow storm thwarts your plans to go out for date night, you can still have a wonderful night. My six ingredients include: 1.The Perfect Music. Our choice is a variety of global chill, down-tempo, trip-hop, French house, hip-house, world beat and electronica. And maybe even a little Miles Davis or Stan Getz. 2. Wine and/or Liquor. Our choice is a good cocktail (with my fave Ancho Reyes liqueur - ancho chile, hot & ...
31 Reasons I’m Vibrant at Sixty. #23 She’s Got Badassedness
Guest post by Jeff Greenwalt, Kim's husband. I’ve watched her for 15 years. She maintains her energy, passion for living…well, I guess you’d say her vibrancy. Why is this? My best conclusion is it’s because of her badassedness. Yes, this is a word – at least if you were at a business leadership off-site meeting I recently attended….badassedness became a proud identifier of one of our leadership teams. Badassedness is pushing forward and not clinging to the past. It’s about challenging ...
31 Reasons I’m Vibrant at Sixty. #22 Happy Triggers
A fun and positive relationship with Jeff is part of my vibrancy. Neither one of us can thrive if we're not working as a team to keep it that way. One of the ways we keep it fun is with our "happy triggers." These verbal cues, or triggers, help diffuse anger and irritability between us so we don't escalate into huge fights. Or they make us laugh and smile every time they're used. OMN Short for On My Nerves. Most of the time we just use the shortcut method and verbalize OMN, but we also use ...
31 Reasons I’m Vibrant at Sixty. #21 The Small Things (part one)
It's the small things that make life so much better. They may be simple, small and even silly, but they add tons to my vibrancy. Small things bring laughter, smiles and generally more pleasant, happy feelings. Gratitude, too, because they make my life so rich. I'm celebrating all the small things today. I realized I have so many I'll have to do another post. Color of the Day. Every morning first thing, along with Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day, I get Pantone's Color of the Day. Today's ...
31 Reasons I’m Vibrant at Sixty. #20 Inspiration from a Book and Blog
Right after I started this 31 Reasons I’m Vibrant at 60 series March first, my dietitian colleague and friend Chris Rosenbloom contacted me. She wanted to feature me in one of her weekly blog posts. I was thrilled and honored. I had just purchased Chris’s new book in February – Food and Fitness after 50: Eat Well, Move Well, Be Well – because I wanted to gain more vibrant aging inspiration. And who better than Chris, as I’ve always considered her one of the foremost authorities when it ...
31 Reasons I’m Vibrant at Sixty. #16 through #19: To-Do Lists and Letting Go
Oh no, I’m not letting go of to-do lists. I love them. They help me accomplish more things by keeping me focused and on-track so my stress levels are reduced. Critical for my vibrant aging. It’s the unrealistic to-do lists I’m talking about. You know the ones. Lists showing 50 things to-do that normally would take 50 hours, but you’re trying to cram it all into 24 hours. Lists that contain 50 things to cram into 24 hours that you believe are absolutely essential for everything to be just ...
31 Reasons I’m Vibrant at Sixty. #15 Rotation.
I have this quirky trait. I rotate the most unusual things because it keeps things vibrant, fresh and interesting. The opposite of being in a rut. I rotate: Bed Side. I can’t stand sleeping on the same side of the bed every night. So Jeff and I rotate sides every night. Even when we travel. It’s just better for my shoulders/back/neck to not fall asleep exactly the same way every night. Besides, we can’t rotate our Tempur-Pedic mattress, so let’s just rotate our weight. Jeff is down 100% with ...
31 Reasons I’m Vibrant at Sixty. #14 Leather and Leopard
Leather fabric and leopard prints. Essential for my style, which could be considered classic with some edginess thrown in. Maybe even bad-ass at times. I always feel vibrant when I dress this way. But FYI - the only "real" leather clothing piece I own is my winter coat, which is now over ten years old. I love it and it's worth every cent. For other "leather-like" pieces, I happily opt for "pleather," polyurethane leather-like material. You'll notice I hang on to my clothes. Once I find ...
31 Reasons I’m Vibrant at Sixty. #13 Volunteer Time
Volunteering is such a win-win situation. It helps keeps me vibrant and it helps the receiving organization reach its goals. But I’m very judicious with my volunteer time. I say no frequently without feeling guilty. I really can’t be a productive or effective volunteer if I feel obligated, really don’t want to be there and/or feel angry. So I always think about ROI when deciding whether to volunteer for a person, entity or organization. ROI = return on investment. Will the time I invest be ...
